Using UPCS codes
Using UPCS Codes for Gates and Compounds
Mark the gate, not the house behind it. How to choose and share a UPCS code for walled compounds, estates and private roads.

Many homes and businesses sit behind a gate: a walled compound, a gated estate, or a farm with a private track. If the code marks the house but the only way in is through a gate on another side, a driver may arrive at the wrong place.
Choose the gate
- Open the map on upcs.io and zoom in until the gate and the surrounding boundary are visible.
- Find the gate that visitors or couriers use, not the one for staff or emergencies.
- Choose the cell at that gate.
- Look up the code and use Open in Map to confirm the marker is at the gate. See opening a code in the map.
Describe the rest in words
Once past the gate, a code cannot say which house or office to find. Add short directions, such as "ring the bell at the gate, house 4 is the second on the left". For buildings with many homes, see codes for apartment buildings.
Examples of useful notes
- "Main gate on the east road. Security will call me. UPCS code PK-1A2B-3C4D."
- "Private track starts at the white gate. Follow it 200 metres to the farmhouse."
When there are two gates
If a compound has separate vehicle and pedestrian entrances, you can create a code for each and say which is which. Each code gives a different cell and so a different location.
Share it
Give the code to couriers using this guide, or add it to an order note with your normal address.
Check the position first with zooming in to the entrance.
Frequently asked questions
Should the code point to the gate or the house?
Usually the gate, because that is where a visitor or courier first needs to arrive. Add words explaining how to continue from there.
