Location Codes for Furniture and Large-Item Delivery

How furniture and appliance delivery teams can use exact location codes to plan access, parking and crew time for heavy deliveries.

A sofa delivery is a different job from a parcel. It needs two people and a large vehicle, and it comes with an appointment window. The vehicle must stop close to the door, and the crew must know how the item gets inside. Arriving at the wrong spot means a heavy item carried a long way, or a second trip.

The questions the crew needs answered

Before leaving the depot, the crew needs to know where to park, which entrance to use, and whether there are steps, lifts or narrow turns. A written address answers only part of the first question. The rest comes from the customer.

    Splitting the information

Treat the code as the answer to where and a short form as the answer to how:

    • Where. The customer places a pin at the exact door or the best place for the van to stop. The resulting code goes into the job.
    • How. Floor number, lift availability, stairs, doorway width and any parking restrictions are collected in separate fields.

The two together tell the dispatcher whether a smaller van is needed, whether a third crew member is advisable and how long to allow.

    Practical uses

    • Appointment windows. Crews with tight slots lose less time at each stop.
    • Pre-delivery calls. The crew confirms that the pin shows the right entrance.
    • Failed deliveries. If an item cannot be delivered, the record shows exactly where the crew went.
    • Assembly services. Installers visiting later find the same point.

    Planning around limits

A pin cannot show a low bridge, a narrow lane or a gated estate that blocks a large lorry. Ask customers about access, and consider an extra field for the nearest place a truck can stop if the door itself is not reachable. In supported countries only, a code can be generated; elsewhere, use normal addresses.

Retailers selling furniture online can capture the pin at checkout through a plugin or the embedded map in the documentation. Related reading: moving and relocation companies and e-commerce stores.

    Crew feedback

Ask crews to report where the pin was wrong or the access was worse than described. A few weeks of that feedback improves both your order form and the way customers are guided to choose the spot.

    Frequently asked questions

Can a location code tell the crew about stairs or lifts?

No. Collect access details such as floor, lift and stairs separately, in your order form.
