Exact Location Codes for E-commerce Stores

How an exact-location code at checkout helps online stores cut failed deliveries, support couriers and keep the order record clear.

An online store only earns revenue when the parcel reaches the customer. A large share of delivery trouble is not about distance but about ambiguity: a street name that appears twice in a city, a house without a number, or a building with three entrances. An exact-location code gives the order a precise point on the map, so the courier is not left to interpret a text address.

    Where the problem shows up

Shops usually meet location problems in a few predictable places. Customers type incomplete addresses on a phone. Couriers call the customer, and the customer cannot explain the way. Re-delivery attempts add cost and delay. In regions where addresses are informal, this is a daily issue rather than an edge case.

How a code fits the checkout

At checkout the customer is shown a map, chooses the exact spot, and a code such as PK-1A2B-3C4D is generated for that 3 m by 3 m cell. The store saves the code together with the latitude and longitude next to the normal address. Fulfilment staff and the courier can then open the pin directly instead of guessing.

The WordPress and WooCommerce plugin shows the map after the billing form and stores the code, latitude and longitude as order meta. The PrestaShop module and the OpenCart extension attach the location to the order in a similar way. UPCS has no ready-made extension for other platforms, but a custom storefront can use the embeddable map described in the documentation.

What to put in the order workflow

    • Keep the written address as the primary field, and treat the code as an additional field.
    • Show the code and a map link on the packing slip or courier manifest.
    • Let customer support look up a code when a customer reports a missed delivery.
    • Make the map optional if your audience includes people who are sending a gift to a place they have not visited.

    Honest limits

A code identifies a location, not a person or a building floor. It does not confirm that someone is home, and it does not tell the courier which apartment to ring. Include the unit number and a phone number as usual. The code also works only in the countries UPCS supports, and a point outside them returns an unsupported location error, so your checkout should fall back to the normal address in that case.

    Getting started

Create a partner account to get an API key, set your allowed origins, and install the plugin or use the embed. If you serve several delivery services, the same code can be passed to any of them as plain text, because the lookup page is public and opens directly from the code. For a wider view of the delivery problem, read the guides hub or the page on online marketplaces.

    Frequently asked questions

Does a UPCS code replace the shipping address at checkout?

No. The customer still gives a normal address. The code is an extra, exact pin that travels with the order and helps the courier find the right door.

Which store platforms have a ready-made UPCS plugin?

WordPress with WooCommerce, PrestaShop and OpenCart 4.x have plugins. Other platforms can use the embeddable map and the REST API.
