Precise Delivery Points for Grocery Delivery
Why grocery delivery with timed slots and cold goods benefits from an exact drop-off point, and how to use location codes sensibly.

Grocery delivery is less forgiving than parcel delivery. Orders have a narrow time slot, frozen and chilled goods have a limited time out of refrigeration, and a missed door often means a refund or a wasted trip. Every minute spent searching for a house is time the cold chain does not have.
What goes wrong in grocery runs
Drivers carry several orders per run and plan the sequence tightly. A single hard-to-find address pushes every later slot back. Typical causes are informal street names, gated compounds where the delivery entrance is different from the main one, and new housing developments that mapping apps have not caught up with.
Using a code as the drop-off pin
When customers register or place an order, they can drop a pin on the map at the exact entrance where they want the groceries handed over, such as the side gate rather than the front door. The resulting code, for example AE-5F6G-7H8J, is stored with the delivery profile. Because the same coordinates always produce the same code, a returning customer's pin can be reused for every later order without re-entering anything.
Workflow suggestions
- Save it to the customer profile. A one-time setup saves effort on every repeat basket.
- Show the pin in the driver's order list. One tap should open navigation to the point.
- Combine with delivery notes. A code locates the spot; a note such as "ring bell twice, dog in garden" covers what a coordinate cannot.
- Handle substitutes and absences. The code does not change what happens when nobody answers, so keep your no-answer policy.
Honest considerations
A 3 m by 3 m cell is precise, but a customer can still pick the wrong spot, for example a neighbouring property. Encourage zooming in until the grid appears and confirming the pin. Also remember that the code identifies a place, not a person, so keep contact numbers for handover.
For the store owner, the code is a field alongside the address. The WooCommerce plugin is one way to capture it if your grocery shop runs on WordPress, and the REST API in the documentation covers custom builds. If you operate restaurant delivery as well, see food delivery for the differences in timing.
Frequently asked questions
Is a location code useful for tall apartment buildings?
It points to the building entrance or the chosen spot, not the floor. Customers should still give the unit, floor and a contact number.
