Location Codes for Food Trucks and Street Vendors

How mobile vendors can share today's pitch as a short location code, so regulars and new customers find them without long directions.

The defining feature of a food truck is that it moves. Monday at a business park, Thursday at a market, Saturday outside a stadium. Customers learn the schedule from social media posts, and each post has to answer "where exactly?" in a single line. A short code does that better than a street name that might refer to a road half a kilometre long.

    The daily pitch problem

Street vendors work at informal spots: the corner of a junction, a spot under a particular tree, the far end of a car park. Regulars know it. New customers see an address that refers to the whole street, and walk up and down looking for the smell of grilling. That is a lost sale.

    A simple routine

    1. When you set up, open the map on your phone and drop a pin on your pitch.
    2. Copy the code into your post or message, for example "Today at GB-4P5Q-6R7S".
    3. Add a few words of description: "by the clock tower, facing the bus stop".
    4. Keep a saved list of your regular pitches, each with its code, so that your weekly schedule can be posted in one go.

Because the same coordinates always give the same code, a pitch you use every week has one stable code, and customers who saved it can find you again.

    Beyond posts

    • Pre-order pickup. A customer who orders ahead can be told which code to walk to.
    • Event applications. Organisers can give vendors a code for the allocated pitch, avoiding map-reading arguments.
    • Supplier drop-offs. Wholesalers delivering ice or stock can find a pitch at a site with no number.
    • Licensing. Your local authority may require particular location details; a UPCS code does not replace any permit.

    Limits

A pin shows where you are, not whether you are open, sold out or permitted to trade there. It cannot show a queue. Do remember that signal at busy sites may be poor, so customers may need to open the link earlier.

Vendors with an online ordering page can read about the plugins, and those who deal with large crowds should see events and festivals. Related: weddings and private venues.

    Frequently asked questions

Does the code update automatically when the truck moves?

No. Each code is a fixed point. Post a new code when you move; there is no live tracking.
