Location Codes for Solar and Energy Installers
How solar and energy installers can use exact location codes for lead capture, site surveys and follow-up visits to the right property.

An installer's sales cycle has several visits: a survey, an installation that may last days, and often an inspection or a service call later. Each visit needs the crew to reach a particular roof or plot. The weakest link is the first one, where a lead has been captured online and the surveyor must find a house that appears on no list with a clear address.
Lead capture
Online enquiry forms ask for a name, a phone number and an address. Customers in newer developments or rural areas often type something incomplete. Adding a map where they pin the property gives the sales team a precise starting point, and lets them cluster leads by area to plan survey rounds efficiently.
Survey and installation
At the survey, the surveyor confirms or corrects the pin and records separate codes where it matters:
- Property entrance, for vehicles and deliveries.
- Roof access side, where scaffolding or ladders go.
- Inverter or battery location, if the household has an outbuilding.
- Ground-mount array area, for land-based installations.
The installation crew and the supplier delivering panels work from the same list.
Why it fits the business
Panel deliveries are bulky and often arrive on a pallet with a tail-lift truck. An exact drop-off point avoids the driver choosing the wrong side of a building. Warranty and service visits years later are easier when the installation record still contains a clear location, not only an address that may have changed.
Keep expectations realistic
A cell is 3 m by 3 m, which locates a property but does not describe it. Roof pitch, shading, structural condition, grid connection and permits are outside what a location code can provide. Do not use it as evidence of system output or site suitability.
Installers can use the web form with the embedded map from the documentation, or capture the pin through a plugin if their shop is on a supported platform; see plugins. Related: field service technicians and utilities and meter reading.
Handover pack
Include the codes in the installation handover pack. When a customer calls about the system years later, the service team opens the same record and goes straight to the right property and side of the building.
Frequently asked questions
Can a location code be used to estimate roof suitability?
No. A code names a position only. Roof orientation, shading and structure need a proper survey.
