Location Codes for Sports Clubs and Facilities

How clubs, leagues and facility managers can name pitches, courts and car parks with location codes that visiting teams can follow.

On match day, thirty people travel to a place they have never been, and half of them are children arriving in cars driven by parents who are late. The club's address is generally an administrative one. The pitch itself may be at the back of a park, reached by a lane that appears on no satnav.

    The away-fixture problem

Local leagues are full of grounds that are hard to find: a school field with a different gate on Saturdays, a public pitch at the end of a path, a rented facility across town from the clubhouse. Fixture lists name the ground and give a postcode that points to a general area. Visiting teams make phone calls, and kick-offs slip.

Codes for each part of a facility

    • Car park entrance, which may be separate from the pitch.
    • Pitch or court, numbered where there are several.
    • Changing rooms and clubhouse.
    • Spectator access, if different from the players' path.
    • Meeting point for tournaments or tours.

A league secretary can include these codes in the fixture list or on the club's website. A manager can paste one into a group chat in a few seconds.

    Facility managers

Leisure centres and sports complexes with many users can list their pitches by code and give hirers a precise point. Contractors who maintain turf or floodlights also benefit from a shared reference for each pitch.

    Limits

The code locates; it does not say whether a pitch is playable, booked or open. If the usual pitch changes at short notice, issue the new code in the same message. For outdoor sports with remote venues, such as cross-country or cycling routes, remember that a code marks start or finish points, not a route.

    Away-fixture trial

Ask a visiting team to try the codes at the next away fixture and report whether they found the pitch without a call. A single round of feedback is usually enough to correct any pin that is not quite right.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a code useful for away fixtures?

Yes. Visiting teams and referees can be given the code for the exact pitch and car park instead of only the club's postal address.
