UPCS Code Format Explained: CC-XXXX-XXXX
Break down the UPCS code format CC-XXXX-XXXX: the two-letter country prefix and the two blocks of letters and digits, with tips for reading and typing.

A UPCS code is written as CC-XXXX-XXXX. The first part is a two-letter country prefix, and the next two parts are blocks of four letters or digits. A real-looking example is PK-1A2B-3C4D.
The three parts
| Part | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| CC | Two-letter country prefix | PK |
| XXXX | First block of letters and digits | 1A2B |
| XXXX | Second block of letters and digits | 3C4D |
The hyphens separate the parts so the code is easy to read, copy and check.
The country prefix
The prefix tells you which country the code belongs to. It is useful as a quick sanity check: if you expect a delivery in one country and the code begins with another prefix, something is wrong. Codes exist for 25 supported countries; see UPCS supported countries overview.
The two blocks
The two blocks of letters and digits identify the cell within the country. They are not a street name or a district, and you cannot read a place from them. Like any alphanumeric location code, the code only makes sense through a lookup.
Each code corresponds to a 3 m x 3 m grid cell, and the same coordinates give the same code. See does the same location give the same UPCS code.
Writing and typing a code
- Write the code with the hyphens, exactly as generated.
- Copy and paste rather than retyping when you can.
- Check letters that look like digits, such as O and 0.
- In forms, label it, for example "UPCS code: PK-1A2B-3C4D". See how to write a digital address in forms.
Using the code in a link
Add the code to the site address to open the lookup directly, as in upcs.io/PK-1A2B-3C4D. This is convenient for messages and printed materials.
What the format does not mean
The format is not a postal code format. It does not follow any national postal code scheme, and it is not issued by a postal operator. See UPCS code vs postal code.
Summary
Country prefix, two blocks, hyphens. That is the whole structure. The details of what the code represents are in what is a UPCS code.
Frequently asked questions
What does the CC in a UPCS code stand for?
CC is a two-letter country prefix, for example PK at the start of PK-1A2B-3C4D.
Can I work out a location by reading the code?
No. The blocks are not meant to be read as a place name. Paste the code into a lookup to see the location on a map.
