Does the Same Location Give the Same UPCS Code?
Yes: the same coordinates always give the same UPCS code. Learn why that is, what happens near cell boundaries, and why consistent codes matter.

Yes. The same coordinates always give the same UPCS code. A code identifies a 3 m x 3 m grid cell, so every point within that cell gives that cell's code, whoever chooses it and whenever they choose it.
Why it is consistent
UPCS codes are derived from position, not assigned at random or in sequence. Because the code is a function of the location, there is nothing that varies between requests. A code generated today is the same as the one generated next month or by a different person.
Why that matters
- Trust. A code printed on a leaflet or a delivery note stays valid.
- Sharing. Two people who describe the same place arrive at the same code.
- Lookup. The code returns the same cell every time.
- Integration. Shops that save codes with orders can rely on them later. If a point has already been generated, the generate endpoint reports it as existing (
is_existing) rather than creating a duplicate.
What counts as the same location
The code identifies a cell, so any two points inside the same 3 m x 3 m cell share a code. That is useful: small differences in where someone taps do not change the result. See what a 3 m x 3 m UPCS cell means.
The boundary caveat
Two points just either side of a cell boundary belong to different cells and therefore have different codes, even if they are only a short distance apart. This is why two people choosing "the front door" may end up with neighbouring codes. In practice, the fix is simple:
- Agree on one person to generate the code.
- Choose a point away from the edge of the building or the gate.
- Share the same code with everyone.

What does not change the code
Nothing about who generated it, when, or from which device changes the code. Adding a label or address to a saved location does not change the code either.
What can differ
Only a different location gives a different code. A code also depends on the country the point falls in, since the code starts with a country prefix; points outside the supported countries cannot receive a code. See UPCS supported countries overview.

Frequently asked questions
Can two people generate different codes for the same door?
If they pick points in the same 3 m x 3 m cell they get the same code. If their points fall on opposite sides of a cell boundary they get neighbouring codes, so agree on one code and share it.
