A Thai address goes from the individual building to the broader administrative divisions. Once you know the Thai terms, the structure is predictable, and the same pattern works in both Thai and romanised form.
Component order
- Recipient name and phone number.
- House number, often written with a slash for a unit, such as
00/00. - Building or village name and floor and room, for condominiums.
- Moo, the village number, mostly outside cities.
- Soi, the lane, often with a number or name.
- Road (thanon).
- Subdistrict: tambon, or khwaeng in Bangkok.
- District: amphoe, or khet in Bangkok.
- Province (changwat), then the postal code.
Language and script
Thai script is used on signs and by couriers, and it is the safest choice for domestic delivery. Romanised versions follow different transliteration conventions, so the same soi may be spelled several ways. When ordering from a shop that only accepts Latin letters, use a romanised address but copy the spelling of soi, road and subdistrict from a reliable source, and add the Thai text if there is a free-text note field. Phone numbers matter, since couriers regularly call to confirm.
Sois, villages and buildings
Main roads have side lanes numbered in sequence, and these can in turn have branches, so a single address can include a soi and a sub-soi. In rural areas, the village number (moo) is an essential part of the address, together with the subdistrict. In condominiums and housing estates, the building name, tower and room number define the delivery point, and the juristic person (building office) often receives parcels.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between tambon and khwaeng?
Both are subdistricts. Tambon is used outside Bangkok, while khwaeng is used for subdistricts inside Bangkok.
Do I need to write the address in Thai script?
For local couriers, Thai script is the most dependable. A romanised address is acceptable for many international and tourist uses.
