Thailand Postal Codes and Addressing Guide

How Thailand's five-digit postal codes and soi-based addresses work, from province to subdistrict, and how a UPCS code adds an exact location.

Thailand uses a five-digit postal code, handled by the national operator Thailand Post. Thai addresses are built from a house number, a village number, a lane (soi), a road, and three administrative levels: subdistrict, district and province. Reading that sequence correctly is the key to understanding any Thai address.

    How postal codes work

The code identifies a delivery area, and the first two digits correspond broadly to the province. Bangkok codes begin with 10, for example, and other provinces have their own starting digits. The remaining three digits narrow the area to a district or subdistrict or delivery office. One code can cover several subdistricts, and some large organisations have their own.

    How addresses are usually written

A Thai address typically lists the house number, then the moo (village number) in rural areas, the soi, the road (thanon), the subdistrict (tambon, or khwaeng in Bangkok), the district (amphoe, or khet in Bangkok), the province (changwat) and finally the postal code. Addresses are written in Thai script locally; a romanised version is common on international orders and in tourist areas.

How UPCS codes work in Thailand

UPCS codes for Thailand use the prefix TH, forming TH-XXXX-XXXX. A code represents a 3 m x 3 m grid cell, and the same coordinates always give the same code. You choose a point on the map at upcs.io and the code is generated.

It is not a postal code, is not issued by Thailand Post or the government, and is not a substitute for any part of the written address. It simply gives a courier or visitor an exact point to navigate to.

Why the postal code alone is not enough

The five digits identify an area, and one code can span several subdistricts. Within it, a delivery depends on the soi, which may be long and branch into smaller lanes, and on building names in condominiums. Couriers frequently ask customers to share a map pin, so having a short, repeatable code for the exact spot is a natural fit. The official postal code and the written soi, road and subdistrict stay in the address as usual, because carriers and online forms still need them.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a UPCS code a Thai postal code?

No. Thailand's postal code has five digits and belongs to the national postal service. A UPCS code such as TH-XXXX-XXXX is an unofficial code for an exact 3 m x 3 m spot.

What is a soi in a Thai address?

A soi is a side street or lane that branches off a main road. Soi are usually numbered, and many have further branching lanes.
