Thailand Delivery and Addressing Challenges
Long sois, sub-lanes, condominium complexes and romanisation differences affect delivery in Thailand. See how an exact-location code can help.

Delivery in Thailand is generally well served by couriers and motorbike riders, but the structure of local addresses, especially in sprawling cities and fast-growing suburbs, creates well-known challenges.
Common challenges
Long soi and branching lanes. Main roads have numbered side lanes, and these can have their own branches. A house number on a long soi may be far from the main road, and a rider can spend a long time confirming the correct branch.
Numbering that does not follow position. House numbers with slashes and different numbering schemes in different estates mean that adjacent numbers are not always neighbours.
Condominiums and large estates. Towers, wings and floors need to be given in full. Parcels are often left with the building office, and without the tower or room number they are slow to route.
Transliteration differences. The same soi, road or subdistrict has several romanised spellings, which makes matching difficult in systems built for Latin letters. Thai script entries and romanised entries may not correspond.
Village numbers in rural areas. Outside cities, the moo and subdistrict matter more than a street, and these details are sometimes missing from forms designed for city addresses.
Reliance on phone calls. As in many countries, riders frequently call customers for directions, and map pins shared by chat applications are commonly used.
Practical steps
- Capture the soi, road, subdistrict, district and province in separate fields, in line with the Thailand address format.
- Confirm the five-digit code against the postal code format.
- Collect building, tower and room number for condominiums.
Where an exact-location code fits
A UPCS code such as TH-XXXX-XXXX marks a specific 3 m x 3 m cell. At checkout, the customer places the pin at the correct gate or building entrance and the shop stores the code with the order. The rider opens the point on a map and navigates to it, instead of deciphering the soi structure.
This is only a supplement. UPCS is not a postal code, is not issued by Thailand Post and is not linked to any carrier. Merchants on WooCommerce, PrestaShop or OpenCart can use the UPCS plugins, and custom stores can use the API documentation.

Frequently asked questions
Why is it difficult to find a Thai address by soi number?
Sois can be long and have branches and sub-lanes, and a house can sit a long way from the main road. The soi number alone is often not enough.
Can a Thai online shop collect a UPCS code?
Yes. A shop can show the UPCS map at checkout through a plugin or the API and keep the code with the order, alongside the normal address.
