A Thai postal code is a five-digit number, written as NNNNN. It is used by Thailand Post and sits at the end of the address after the province name. It is requested on most online checkouts and courier forms in the country.
Structure
The first two digits point to the province, so codes within one province usually share the same opening pair. For instance, Bangkok codes begin with 10, and Chiang Mai codes begin with 50. The last three digits narrow the area to a district, subdistrict or delivery office.
| Part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| First two digits | Province or special area, such as Bangkok |
| Last three digits | District, subdistrict group or delivery office |
Two things are worth knowing. First, a single code can cover several subdistricts, so the code alone does not name the subdistrict. Second, a two-digit prefix is not always unique to one province (for example, some addresses in Samut Prakan, next to Bangkok, also begin with 10), so do not treat the prefix as proof of the province.
Examples of valid format
Generic values showing the form only:
NNNNN— five digits, no separators: valid.NNNN— four digits: incomplete.NNNNNN— six digits: too long, possibly from a country with six-digit codes.NNN-NN— hyphenated: not the standard form for Thailand.
Common mistakes
- Wrong province prefix. The leading two digits must be compatible with the province you are writing. Check this before submitting.
- Using a Bangkok code for a province next to Bangkok. Neighbouring provinces have different codes, even if the address is only a short drive from the capital.
- Dropping a leading digit. Some spreadsheet programs strip leading zeros. Thai codes in most regions start with non-zero digits, but store the code as text in any case to be safe.
- Confusing it with a UPCS code.
TH-XXXX-XXXXis an unofficial exact-location code rather than a postal code.
Beyond the postal code
The code gets mail to the right delivery area, and the soi, road and house number do the rest. For a precise entrance, particularly in large housing estates, you can add a UPCS code from the UPCS map next to the postal code. It does not replace the official number.
