Why Precise Drop Points Matter in Delivery
A drop point is the exact spot where a parcel should be left. See why precision saves time, reduces errors and helps in complex locations.

A drop point is the exact place where a parcel should be handed over. For a house that may be the front door; for a large estate it might be a particular gate, a side entrance or a loading bay. The more precise the drop point, the fewer decisions the courier has to make.
Address versus drop point
An address identifies a property or building. A drop point identifies the spot at which the parcel actually changes hands. The two can be far apart: a campus has one address but dozens of possible entrances. A residential compound may have a front gate half a kilometre from your house.
What precision saves
- Search time. The driver heads straight to the right spot.
- Phone calls. Fewer calls to ask where to go.
- Wrong entrances. Less walking and backtracking.
- Misdelivery. Less chance of leaving the parcel at a neighbouring unit.
These small savings repeat at every stop, which is why precision matters more than it first seems. See route planning basics.
Where precision matters most
- Large sites and campuses; see offices and campuses.
- New developments missing from maps; see new developments with no street names.
- Rural properties with long access tracks.
- Dense areas where several buildings share a name or street.
How to define a drop point
- Describe it in words: "Rear gate on the service lane".
- Mark it on a map when ordering.
- Add a UPCS code if the shop supports it.
A UPCS code represents a 3 m by 3 m cell, and the same coordinates always give the same code. A courier can paste the code into upcs.io to see the point, then use Open in Map or Get Directions. The code adds precision to a standard address; it is not an official postcode, and whether a gate is open is outside what a code controls.
Limits
A precise point does not describe the floor, the gate code or the availability of the recipient. For these, use written instructions. See how to write delivery instructions and pin-drop delivery locations at checkout.
Summary
An address gets the courier to the neighbourhood and building; a drop point gets the parcel into the right hands. Both are needed, and precision is most valuable where the written address is least clear.
Frequently asked questions
What is a drop point?
It is the specific place where the courier should hand over or leave the parcel, such as a particular gate, entrance or loading bay.
How precise is a UPCS code?
Each UPCS code corresponds to a 3 m by 3 m grid cell, so it identifies a small, specific spot on the map.
