    Pin-Drop Delivery Locations at Checkout

A pin-drop lets buyers mark their exact delivery point on a map at checkout. Learn how it works, when it helps and how UPCS plugins support it.

A pin-drop delivery location is a point the buyer places on a map during checkout. Instead of relying only on typed text, the order carries the exact spot where the parcel should arrive.

    Why it helps

Written addresses describe a place indirectly through street names and numbers. Those can be missing, duplicated or confusing. A map point is direct: two people looking at the same coordinates see the same place. This is especially useful in new developments, large compounds, rural areas and informal neighbourhoods; see delivery in areas without street names.

    How it works at checkout

    1. The buyer fills in the usual address fields.
    2. A map appears.
    3. The buyer moves the pin to the exact entrance or drop point.
    4. The location is saved with the order for the seller and courier.

The pin should supplement the address, not replace it. The courier still needs the building, floor and unit.

    What UPCS adds

UPCS turns a point chosen on a map into a short code in the form CC-XXXX-XXXX, where each code corresponds to a 3 m by 3 m grid cell. The WordPress / WooCommerce plugin shows a map after the WooCommerce billing form and saves the UPCS code, latitude and longitude as order meta. The PrestaShop module shows a "UPCS Delivery Location" card on orders when you enable "Link location to order". The OpenCart extension attaches the location to the order. See how a UPCS code can be added to an order.

UPCS codes are not official postcodes and do not replace national postal systems. They also work only in the 25 supported countries.

    Good design choices

    • Make the map step optional where the address is already clear, or required where it is often unclear.
    • Show a short prompt: "Drag the pin to your entrance."
    • Let buyers confirm the point before paying.
    • Keep the written address fields visible, as covered in checkout address form best practices.

    What it does not solve

A pin does not tell the courier about gate codes, floors or availability. Pair it with clear instructions; see how to write delivery instructions. For why exact points matter, read why precise drop points matter.
