Exact-Location Codes and Postcodes Together
Postcodes route mail to an area; an exact-location code like UPCS points to a precise spot. See how they work side by side on an address.

A postcode and an exact-location code answer different questions. The postcode says which delivery area an address belongs to. An exact-location code says which precise spot on the map you mean. Used together, they cover both the mail system and the final step to the door.
What each one does best
- The postcode serves the postal network, pricing zones and form validation.
- The exact-location code serves navigation and handover: finding the gate, entrance or meeting point.
Neither replaces the other. A postcode can't reach the precision of a pin, and a pin code does not take part in mail sorting. The limits of area codes are explained in why postcodes cannot pinpoint exact locations.
How UPCS fits in
UPCS is a system that generates a short code for an exact location chosen on a map. The code has the form CC-XXXX-XXXX: a two-letter country prefix and two blocks of letters and digits, such as PK-1A2B-3C4D. Each code corresponds to a 3 m by 3 m grid cell, and the same coordinates always give the same code.
To use a code, you paste it into the search box on upcs.io, or add it to the site address, such as upcs.io/PK-1A2B-3C4D. The lookup page shows the country, coordinates and options to open the map, get directions or copy a link.
Typical ways to combine them
- Write the full postal address, then add the code on a separate line, for example on a delivery note.
- Ask customers at checkout for the usual address and an optional map location.
- Give visitors the code on an invitation, in addition to the street address.
Important boundaries
A UPCS code is not an official postal code and does not replace national postal systems. It works in the countries UPCS supports; a point outside them returns an error. The postal operator still handles mail by its own postcode.
Where this helps most
Rural properties, large sites, new developments and places with informal addresses benefit most. See postcodes in rural and remote areas and countries without a postcode system. To compare the three forms of location, read postcode vs address vs coordinates.
Frequently asked questions
Does an exact-location code replace my postcode?
No. UPCS codes are not official postal codes and are not issued by any government. They are designed to accompany a normal address.
What does a UPCS code look like?
It has a two-letter country prefix followed by two blocks of letters and digits, for example PK-1A2B-3C4D. Each code refers to a 3 m by 3 m cell.
