Postcodes in Rural and Remote Areas
Rural postcodes often cover wide areas with few streets and unnumbered houses. Learn how they work and how to get a package to your door.

In towns, a postcode might cover a single street. In the countryside, one code can cover a whole village and the farms around it. The code does its job for the postal operator, but it tells much less about where a particular house is.
Why rural codes are broad
Postcodes follow delivery rounds. A rural round may have a small number of addresses spread across a very large area, and carriers drive the same loop regardless. There is little benefit in dividing it further, so a single code is used. The relationship between density and size is explored in how big is a postcode area.
Addresses that do not look like city addresses
Rural addresses may use a house name rather than a number, a road with no clear sequence, or a long track off a main road. Two properties with the same code may be several kilometres apart. A courier unfamiliar with the area can easily end up at the wrong gate.
Common problems
- satellite navigation takes the driver to the nearest road, not the right track
- a postcode area is large, so map searches by code return a general centre point
- delivery fees can be higher; see how postcodes affect delivery fees
- a seasonal or temporary access road is not on the map
What you can do
- Include the house name and number exactly as the operator uses them.
- Add a short note, such as "turn at the red barn, second gate".
- Provide a mobile number for the carrier.
- Share a map pin or an exact-location code for the gate.
How an exact-location code helps
A UPCS code points to a 3 m by 3 m cell, so the driver can open it on a map and navigate to the entrance. It supplements the address and the official postcode. You can see why a postcode alone cannot do this in why postcodes cannot pinpoint exact locations, and how to combine both in postcodes and exact-location codes together.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my rural postcode cover so many properties?
With few addresses spread over a large area, one code can cover many square kilometres without needing finer divisions.
How can I help couriers find a remote property?
Give clear directions, a phone number, and if possible a precise map location along with the postcode.
