Returns and Address Handling for Online Orders

Returns involve two addresses: where the item is collected and where it goes. Learn how to keep return addresses clear for buyers, sellers and couriers.

A return reverses the delivery path. The parcel starts at the buyer's address and ends at a seller or returns centre. Each end needs a clear address, and mistakes at either end cause delays and disputes.

    The two addresses

    1. Pickup or drop-off address. Where the item leaves the buyer. This may be the buyer's home, a collection point or a carrier counter.
    2. Return destination. Where the item is sent. Sellers often use a warehouse or returns centre instead of the storefront.

    Common problems

    • The buyer sends the item to the original dispatch address, which is no longer used for returns.
    • The return label has no unit or department, so it sits in a general mailroom.
    • The pickup address from the buyer is not the same as the delivery address, and the driver is not told.
    • The buyer is not available at the collection time.

    What sellers should do

    • Show one return address on the order confirmation and the returns page.
    • Include any reference number or department the destination needs.
    • Offer both pickup and drop-off options where possible.
    • Keep the original delivery details on file, including notes and any saved location. See how a UPCS code can be added to an order.

    What buyers should do

    Address changes

A buyer may want the courier to collect from a different place than the original one, such as an office. Make sure that is stated on the return request. See also changing a delivery address after you order.

    The wider picture

Returns belong to a broader process called reverse logistics; see reverse logistics basics. Handling this process with the same care as forward delivery avoids lost items and unpaid refunds.

    Frequently asked questions

Which address should a returned parcel use?

It should go to the return address stated by the seller, which may be a warehouse or returns centre rather than the shop's public address.

Can a courier collect a return from my location?

Some sellers and carriers offer pickup. When they do, the pickup address and any access notes should be as clear as for the original delivery.
