An Indian PIN code is a six-digit number, for example NNNNNN. PIN stands for Postal Index Number. It is used by India Post and is expected on almost every address form in the country, from online shops to bank applications.

    What the digits mean

The structure is hierarchical, and each group narrows the area:

    Digits Meaning
First digit Broad postal region (zone)
First two digits Sub-region or postal circle
    First three digits Sorting district
Last three digits Individual delivery post office

One additional detail is that the first digit is not zero. PIN codes beginning with 9 are used for the Army Postal Service, which is separate from ordinary civilian addressing.

The practical effect is that PIN codes that share leading digits are geographically related, and the final three digits identify the delivery office that serves the address. The PIN covers an area served by that post office, so many streets and buildings share one PIN.

    Examples of valid format

These are generic examples to show the form only:

    • NNNNNN — six digits, no spaces, no letters: valid.
    • NNN NNN — spaced into groups of three: commonly seen in print, but remove the space in online forms that expect a continuous number.
    • NNNNN — five digits: invalid, a digit has been lost.
    • NNNNNNN — seven digits: invalid, an extra digit was typed.
    • A code starting with 0: not a valid PIN.

    Common mistakes

    • Transposed digits. Swapping two digits often still produces a real code, so the error may not be caught and the parcel is sent to the wrong office.
    • Using a city-level PIN for every address. Large cities have many PIN codes. Use the one for the exact locality.
    • Writing the PIN after the state without clear separation. Put it on its own line or after the state so it is easy to read.
    • Confusing it with a UPCS code. A UPCS code like IN-XXXX-XXXX is unofficial and covers an exact 3 m x 3 m cell, whereas a PIN covers an area.

When the PIN is not enough

A PIN code gets a letter to the right delivery office. The street, building, floor and landmark take it the rest of the way. If your location is difficult to explain, you can add a UPCS code created on the map alongside the official PIN.
