India Post is the authority for PIN codes, so the safest way to find one is through the postal operator's own directory or search tool. You need the locality and city, and ideally the name of the post office that serves the area.
Ways to find a PIN code
- Search the postal operator's directory. Search by locality, post office name or district. Results list the post office and its six-digit PIN.
- Check existing mail. Letters, bank statements, utility bills and parcels sent to the same address carry the correct PIN.
- Ask the person at the address. Residents and offices almost always know their PIN, because it is needed for official forms.
- Visit or call the local post office. Staff there know which PIN covers which streets.
How to verify the code
First, count: it must have exactly six digits and must not begin with zero. Then check that the city and state you are writing match the area the PIN belongs to. When a directory returns several PINs for one town, compare the locality or post office names with your address, and select the one that matches, not the first result. If the PIN comes from an online shop's auto-fill, check the locality it proposes before accepting it.
If you are not sure
- Use the code from a recent piece of mail whenever you can.
- If there are two candidates, include the post office or locality name in the address so the sorting office can see the intent.
- Write the landmark and the phone number clearly.
- Do not alter or guess digits. A real but wrong PIN is accepted by most forms and can send the parcel elsewhere.
Adding a precise location
PIN codes cover areas. If the address is in a new layout, a large complex or a lane without clear names, a UPCS code can supplement it. Open the UPCS map, mark the entrance and copy the generated IN-XXXX-XXXX code. It is an unofficial exact-location code and does not stand in for the PIN.
