An address in India is written from the smallest unit to the largest: unit, building, street, locality, city, state and PIN code. The address is usually written on several lines, and the final line holds the city, state and six-digit PIN.

    Component order

    1. Recipient name (and company, if relevant).
    2. Flat, house or plot number, and floor.
    3. Building, apartment complex or society name.
    4. Street, road or lane, sometimes with a cross-road or main-road number.
    5. Locality, area, sector or colony.
    6. Landmark.
    7. City or town, and district where it adds clarity.
    8. State and PIN code.
    9. Phone number, because couriers routinely call.

    Language and script

English is the common language for online orders and courier labels. Local names may be spelled in more than one way in English, so match the spelling used by the recipient. Addresses on paper letters can be written in a regional language and script, and India Post handles many of them, but for online systems a romanised address is far more reliable. State names should be written in full or with a widely recognised abbreviation, not an ad hoc short form.

    Areas, buildings and landmarks

Urban addresses frequently include apartment complexes with blocks or towers, which makes the building name and block letter essential. In many localities, houses are not numbered in a continuous order, which is why directions such as "near" or "opposite" a recognisable place are standard. Some places use sector numbers, phases or colony names in place of street names. Give each of these as it is used locally.

    Formatted example

    All values are placeholders:

    Recipient Name
Flat 000, Block A, Building Name
Street / Road Name, Locality Name
    Landmark: near [well-known place]
City Name, State Name - NNNNNN
    India
    Phone: +91 XXXXX XXXXX
    UPCS code: IN-XXXX-XXXX

The UPCS line is optional and unofficial. It lets the courier open the exact point on a map. You can generate one on the UPCS map.

    Frequently asked questions

Where does the PIN code go in an Indian address?

It goes at the end, on the last line or directly after the city and state, as six digits without spaces.

Should I include a landmark in an Indian address?

Yes. A landmark such as a temple, school, hospital or large shop is a normal and helpful part of addresses, especially where building numbers are unclear.
