An Iranian postal code (کد پستی) consists of ten digits and is generally assigned to an individual building or unit. It is one of the more granular national postal code systems, and it is requested on most forms, shipping labels and online orders in the country.
Structure of the ten digits
The code has two practical halves. The first five digits identify the city and the district or block within it. The last five digits identify the street segment and the specific building. People commonly read and write it as one ten-digit number, though some documents show it as two groups of five digits.
You do not need to decode it; what matters is that all ten digits are entered in order. Because the code is so specific, a single wrong digit can point to a different street or building.
Examples of valid format
These are format examples only and are not real codes:
1234567890— ten digits, no separator12345 67890— two groups of five, written with a space for readability
Persian digits such as ۱۲۳۴۵۶۷۸۹۰ represent the same values.
Invalid forms include nine or eleven digits, a code containing letters, or one with a country prefix such as IR-1234567890.
Persian and Latin digits
Printed documents inside Iran often use Persian digits, while databases and many websites expect Latin digits. If a form rejects your input, switch your keyboard layout and re-enter the number. Copying a code from a Persian document into a Latin-only field can introduce hidden characters, so retype if validation fails.
Common mistakes
- Entering nine digits because a leading digit was dropped.
- Using a neighbour's code. Because each building tends to have its own, a code for the same street does not necessarily fit your door.
- Mixing digit sets in one field.
- Leaving spaces or dashes where a plain ten-digit number is required.
- Confusing it with a phone number or national ID number.
Steps for lookup are on the find a postal code page, and the placement within an address is shown in the address format guide.
Where UPCS fits
The official ten-digit code points to a registered building. A UPCS code, such as IR-XXXX-XXXX, points to a precise 3 m by 3 m spot on the map, such as a gate or secondary entrance. It is not an official postal code and cannot be entered in a postal code field; use it as an additional note. See the Iran overview.
Frequently asked questions
Does an Iranian postal code identify one building?
In general yes. The ten-digit code is assigned at the building or unit level, so it is far more specific than the area codes used in many countries.
Can I enter Persian digits in a postal code field?
Many Iranian forms accept them, but some international systems only accept Latin digits. When in doubt, use Latin digits 0 to 9 for the same number.
