Sanitation and Septic Services: Find the Access Point

Septic tanker operators and sanitation teams can use a UPCS code to reach the exact tank access, lane or manhole for emptying and repair.

Emptying a septic tank is a job where the last twenty metres matter most. The truck is heavy and wide, the lane may be narrow, and the tank cover is under a slab, a yard or a garden. Crews often spend more time finding the right gate than doing the work. A UPCS code ends the search: it takes anyone who opens it to the exact spot that was picked, a 3 m x 3 m square.

    The location problem

Sanitation operators serve areas where roads are unnamed and houses unnumbered, including growing neighbourhoods and informal settlements. Customers phone from elsewhere and give directions from memory. Two sites on the same lane can look the same from the vehicle. A mistaken arrival at the neighbour's gate costs fuel, time and sometimes an argument.

Vehicle size matters too. Standard vacuum trucks cannot enter many narrow lanes, so operators use smaller machines, long hoses or manual emptying, and the crew needs to know where the nearest point is that the vehicle can reach before the job starts.

There is also a difference between the house and the access point: the cover may be on the far side of the compound or on the street edge, and the driver needs the second.

    How a code helps

The customer, or the operator's dispatcher, picks the access point on the UPCS map and attaches the code to the order. The driver enters it in the search box or opens upcs.io/<code> and sees the exact point with Get Directions. Return jobs are quick: the same code is kept in the customer file, so the next service needs no new directions.

    Workflow options

    • Phone orders: dispatcher opens the map, picks the point with the customer on the line, and reads back the code.
    • Web or messaging orders: embed the map in your booking page using a server-created session; onSelect returns the code, coordinates and share link.
    • Route planning: collect the day's codes and have the driver open each in order.
    • Records: POST /v1/upcs/generate and GET /v1/upcs/lookup/{code} for your own database; details are in the documentation.

    Tips

    1. Pick the cover or the nearest vehicle-safe parking point, depending on what the crew needs.
    2. If access is via a narrow lane, pick the lane entrance as well and note it in the job.
    3. Save the code in the customer record after the first visit.
    4. Add a landmark in the note as a helpful extra.

    Frequently asked questions

Can the code mark where the hose must reach?

Yes. Pick the tank cover or the nearest point the vehicle can park, and share that code with the crew.

Can customers order service with a code?

Yes. A customer can pick the exact point on a map you embed, or send the code from upcs.io, together with the order.

    Does UPCS cover disposal sites?

You can give a disposal or treatment point its own code, like any other location. UPCS does not manage disposal.
