Location Codes for Hotels and Short-Term Rentals
How hotels, guesthouses and holiday-let hosts can send guests an exact arrival point and avoid the late-night phone call asking where the door is.
Updated 14 October 2026 · 2 min read
Guests tend to find a hotel when it is on a main street. A holiday apartment above a pharmacy, a guesthouse down an alley, or a villa behind a gate is different. The guest arrives tired, often after dark, and the host's phone rings. A precise point sent in advance prevents most of those calls.
What guests struggle with
The listing address may be right, but the entrance is on another side of the building. Reception may be on the second floor with no signage at ground level. A self check-in lockbox can sit on a wall nobody would think to look at. Taxi drivers, who do not know the building either, take the guest to the wrong end of the street.
Using a code in the guest journey
Generate a code for the entrance the guest actually uses. Include it in the confirmation email and the day-before message, along with a short line such as "Green gate, left of the bakery, code box on the right". If the arrival process is different for late check-in, create a second code for that door.
Because the guest can paste the code into upcs.io or open a link, they can also pass it on to a taxi driver or a friend who is joining them.
Who benefits
- Hosts with several properties can keep one code per property and per entrance.
- Hotel groups can use codes for the car park and the luggage drop.
- Property managers can give cleaners and maintenance staff the same pin.
- Airport transfer drivers get a precise destination.
What to keep in mind
A code finds a place; it does not unlock it. Keep door codes and key arrangements in a separate message, and be careful not to publish the exact location of private homes on public pages before a booking is confirmed. Some hosts prefer to share the precise pin only after payment.
Sites built on WordPress and WooCommerce can show a map with the plugin's [upcs_map] shortcode (see plugins), and custom builds can use the embeddable map. Related pages: tourism and attractions and car rental and sharing.
Frequently asked questions
Should I put the code in the booking confirmation?
Yes, it works well in the confirmation and pre-arrival message, with a short written description of the entrance and any check-in steps.
