Location Codes and Address Verification in Banking
A concept-level look at how an exact-location code could support, but not replace, address checks in know-your-customer processes.

This page is conceptual. UPCS does not provide address validation, identity verification or any regulated banking service, and a UPCS code is not an official document. What follows is a discussion of how the idea of an exact-location code relates to the address problems banks face.
The problem banks describe
When a customer opens an account, the institution must record where they live. In places where addresses are informal, a written address may match no authoritative database. Staff then rely on documents, such as utility bills, and on visits or calls. Different spellings, missing house numbers and shared addresses make records inconsistent and hard to compare.
What a location code could add
An exact point is a structured piece of data. Asked to drop a pin at their home entrance, a customer produces a code and coordinates that are unambiguous, comparable and easy to store. A bank could, in principle, use it for:
- Consistent records. One format for the same place, regardless of how the street name is spelled.
- Field visits. An agent doing an in-person check can find the door.
- Duplicate checks. An institution could compare stored points in its own data and send matches for human review, under its own rules. UPCS does not provide this analysis.
What it cannot do
A code does not show that a person lives at a place. Anyone can pick any point on the map. It does not tie to a national address register, it is not a postal code and it is not accepted by any regulator by virtue of existing. A pin is a claim made by the customer, not a verified fact.
Sensible position for institutions
Treat the code as supplementary information, stored beside the verified address and documents your compliance rules require. Do not substitute it for them, and handle it as personal data. Any use in risk decisions should be assessed against your legal and regulatory obligations.
If you want to see the underlying capability, the documentation describes lookup and generation endpoints. Related pages include government and public services and insurance claims.
Before any pilot
Any institution considering this idea should involve its compliance and legal teams first. The value of a location field depends entirely on how it is combined with the verification steps already required, and on local data-protection rules.
Frequently asked questions
Is UPCS an address verification service?
No. UPCS does not offer address validation or verification as a product. A code is a location reference that an organisation may choose to collect.
Does a UPCS code count as proof of address?
No. It is not a government-issued or official document. Regulators and institutions decide what counts as proof of address.
