Missing Apartment Numbers and Delivery Errors

An address without a unit or flat number often stalls at the door. See what happens, how to fix it and how to prevent it at checkout.

When an address has no apartment, flat or unit number, the courier knows the building but not the door. In a small house this is rarely an issue; in a tower with hundreds of units it can stop the delivery entirely.

    What the courier can do

    1. Call the recipient. The fastest solution, if the number works.
    2. Ask at reception or the guard desk. This works only if they know the name.
    3. Check the buzzer list. It may list names but not unit numbers.
    4. Leave the parcel in a shared area. Some carriers do not allow this.
    5. Record a failed attempt. The parcel goes back to the depot.

    Why the number is missing

    • The buyer used a form without a unit field.
    • The unit was put in a note that did not reach the courier.
    • The buyer forgot it or thought it was optional.
    • A saved address lacked the detail.

    How buyers can avoid it

    • Enter the unit in its own field if one exists.
    • Repeat it in the delivery note: "Flat 52, 5th floor".
    • Check that your name appears on the buzzer or mailbox.
    • Keep your phone available.

Instructions for other details are in delivering to apartment blocks and flats.

    How shops can avoid it

    1. Add a dedicated unit or floor field and mark it clearly.
    2. Show a hint such as "Apartment, suite, floor".
    3. Warn the buyer when the street is known to have mostly multi-unit buildings and the field is empty.
    4. Print the field prominently on the shipping label.

Where a map point helps and where it does not

A map point can bring the courier to the correct entrance of a building, particularly in complexes with several blocks. It cannot identify the unit within the building, so the written unit number is still required. A UPCS code identifies a 3 m by 3 m cell; it complements the address and does not describe floors.

    If it already happened

Contact the seller or carrier, provide the missing number and ask for another attempt. See changing a delivery address after you order and failed delivery attempts explained.

    Frequently asked questions

What happens if my apartment number is missing?

The courier may delay, call you, leave the parcel with someone else or mark the attempt as failed, depending on the building and the carrier.

Can I fix it after ordering?

Often yes if you contact the seller or carrier early. See the page on changing a delivery address after you order.
