Failed Delivery Attempts: What Happens Next

After a failed delivery attempt, carriers usually retry, hold the parcel or return it. Learn the typical options and how to avoid another miss.

A failed delivery attempt is recorded when a courier tries to deliver but cannot complete the handover. The parcel then enters an exception path that differs between carriers, but the basic options are similar.

    Common outcomes

    1. Redelivery. The carrier tries again on another day, sometimes at a time you can choose.
    2. Hold for collection. The parcel waits at a depot or pickup point for a limited period.
    3. Return to sender. After repeated attempts or a holding period, the parcel travels back to the seller.
    4. Contact for details. The carrier or shop asks for a corrected address or a new instruction.

Check your carrier's notice or tracking page to see which one applies.

    Why the attempt failed

The reason recorded is often short: "recipient not available", "address not found", "access denied". These map to the three groups in why deliveries fail. Identify which one it was before you ask for another attempt.

    What you can do

    • Contact the seller or carrier early. Delays reduce the options.
    • Correct the address. If it was incomplete, provide the missing unit, entrance or landmark.
    • Share a precise location. If the courier could not find the spot, a map point or code can help.
    • Change the handover. Choose a pickup point, a neighbour or a safe place; see safe place delivery.
    • Be available. Select a time window if you can; see delivery time windows.

    For sellers

Define what happens after each failure and tell customers in plain language. Keep a record of the reason and the location the driver reached. If the order has a stored location, it is easier to see whether the driver was near the correct point. The costs of repeated attempts are discussed in the cost of failed deliveries.

    Returned parcels

When a parcel comes back, the seller has to decide whether to refund, resend or hold the order. See returns address handling for how return destinations work.

A note on cash on delivery

Failed attempts are more common with cash orders if the buyer is not ready or not reachable. See cash on delivery and address confirmation.
