Landmark-Based Directions: When They Help and Fail
Landmarks such as mosques, shops and bridges guide many deliveries. Learn where landmark directions work well, where they fail and how to improve them.

A landmark direction describes a place by pointing to something nearby: "behind the central bus stop", "opposite the red school". In many parts of the world this is how people naturally explain where they live, and couriers are used to it. It is helpful, but it has limits.
Why landmarks work
- People remember them without effort.
- Locals can usually recognise them without a map.
- They fill the gap where street names or numbers are missing or inconsistent.
Why they fail
- They change. Shops close, signs are replaced and buildings are renamed.
- They are subjective. "Near" means different things to different people.
- They are local. A driver from another district may not know the landmark.
- They are not searchable. Many navigation apps do not recognise "the old tree".
- They can be duplicated. Several places may share the same name.
Choosing a good landmark
- Pick something large, permanent and visible from the road.
- Use its official name or the name everyone uses.
- Give a direction and distance: "100 metres past the bridge, on the left".
- Give no more than two landmarks.
Combining landmarks with a location
The best notes pair a landmark with a fixed reference. For example: "Green gate behind City Hospital, exact location shared in the order." The landmark gives the human context; the map point gives certainty. See pin-drop delivery locations at checkout.
A UPCS code can fill the second role: it points to a 3 m by 3 m cell and opens in a map. It does not replace your address or an official postcode, but it gives a courier a clear target even when the landmark is unfamiliar.
For sellers
If you serve areas where landmarks are common, add a "nearest landmark" field at checkout rather than hoping customers include it in a single address line. See checkout address form best practices.

Frequently asked questions
Are landmarks a valid way to give a delivery address?
They are widely used and often helpful, but they are subjective and can change, so they work best alongside a full address or exact location.
Which landmarks are best?
Large, permanent and well-known ones, such as a school, a hospital or a major junction, are more reliable than small shops that may close.
