    Exact-Location Codes for Ambiguous Addresses

When an address could mean more than one place, a short exact-location code identifies the precise spot. See how it works alongside written addresses.

An address is ambiguous when it could reasonably refer to more than one place, or when it points to an area rather than a specific spot. Examples include a street with two similarly named districts, a compound with many entrances, a building without a number or a rural property described only by landmarks.

    Where ambiguity comes from

    • Repeated place and street names.
    • Missing house numbers or street names.
    • Large sites with several gates.
    • Spelling and transliteration variants.
    • New buildings not yet on maps.

    What an exact-location code adds

A UPCS code identifies one 3 m by 3 m cell on the map, picked by choosing the spot on a map. It has the form CC-XXXX-XXXX, such as PK-1A2B-3C4D, starting with a two-letter country prefix. Anyone who receives the code can paste it into the search box on upcs.io, or add it after the site address, to see the location, coordinates and options to open it in a map or get directions.

How to use it with an address

    1. Write the address as normal, in the destination's format.
    2. Add the code on a separate line, or in delivery notes, or in a note field at checkout.
    3. Keep the written address complete; do not drop lines because a code is present.

The courier uses the address to confirm the recipient and the code to find the exact doorstep.

    What it does not do

    • It does not replace the written address or postal code.
    • It is not issued by a postal operator or government.
    • It does not validate that an address exists.
    • It works only in the countries UPCS supports; elsewhere the lookup returns an unsupported-location error.

    Who benefits

Residents in places without formal addressing, businesses that deliver to hard-to-find entrances, and visitors meeting someone at a specific gate or building. See informal settlements and the addressing gap.

    Summary

An exact-location code turns a vague address into a pinpoint. Use it as a companion to the written address, never as a substitute.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a UPCS code an official postal code?

No. UPCS codes are not issued by any government or postal operator and do not replace national postal codes. They are an additional exact-location identifier.

How precise is a UPCS code?

Each code corresponds to a 3 m by 3 m grid cell, and the same coordinates always give the same code.
