Delivery Address vs Billing Address
The delivery address is where goods go; the billing address is tied to payment. Learn the difference and when the two can or cannot be the same.

Online checkouts usually ask for two addresses. They look similar but serve different purposes, and confusing them leads to declined payments and misdirected parcels.
Delivery address
The delivery address, also called the shipping address, is where the goods or documents should physically be sent. It must be a place where someone can receive the item, and it needs enough detail for a courier to find it: unit, floor, entrance and, ideally, a phone number.
Billing address
The billing address is associated with the payment method. It is usually the address the card issuer or bank holds for the account holder. It is used to verify the payment and to appear on invoices. It does not need to be a place where parcels can be received.
When they differ
- Sending a gift to someone else.
- Delivering to a workplace while the card is registered at home.
- Buying for a business from a personal card.
- Shipping to a collection point or neighbour.
- Living at a temporary address while the bank holds the permanent one.
Common problems
- Using the delivery address as the billing address, causing a payment mismatch.
- Entering the billing address in the delivery fields and sending goods to a place with nobody present.
- Leaving out the unit or floor in the delivery address.
- Using a PO box as a delivery address with a carrier that cannot deliver to one. See PO boxes explained.
Tips for shoppers
- Copy the billing address exactly as it appears on your card statement.
- Check the delivery address for unit and entrance.
- Add a phone number.
Tips for stores
- Offer a "same as billing" option.
- Keep the two addresses in separate fields.
- Let customers add delivery notes or a map pin to the delivery address only. See address fields in online forms.
Summary
Billing is about who pays; delivery is about where the goods go. Treat them as separate pieces of data and ask for each clearly.
Frequently asked questions
Can my delivery and billing addresses be different?
Yes. Many people ship gifts or work orders to one place while the payment method is registered to another.
Why does my billing address need to be exact?
Payment providers often compare it with the details held by the card issuer, so a mismatch can cause a payment to be declined.
