The United Arab Emirates does not have a nationwide postal code system in everyday use. Instead, mail is traditionally delivered to P.O. Boxes operated by the national postal operator, Emirates Post, and street deliveries depend on emirate, area, building and landmark descriptions.

How the system works instead of postal codes

Home delivery by post has historically been limited, and many residents and businesses rent a P.O. Box. A P.O. Box number together with the emirate, such as Dubai, is therefore a standard mailing address. For couriers and online orders, addresses are normally written as a building or villa, street or area, community and emirate, along with a phone number.

Some local systems add exact references. In Dubai, the municipality's Makani system assigns a number to entrances so a location can be found precisely. Other emirates use plot numbers, community and sector names, and street numbers. Because these vary by emirate, a courier usually relies on a call and a map pin.

    How addresses are written

A street address is commonly: villa or building name or number, street, area or community, emirate, and country, followed by a phone number. A P.O. Box address replaces the street details with the box number. The UAE address format page shows both styles.

Online checkouts built for international use often require a postal code field. The postal code page explains what to do when no code exists.

How UPCS codes work in the UAE

UPCS codes for the United Arab Emirates have the prefix AE and look like AE-XXXX-XXXX, with letters or digits in each block. A code corresponds to a 3 m by 3 m cell on the map, so it can mark a villa gate, a building entrance or a pickup spot.

A UPCS code is not an official postal code and is not issued by Emirates Post or any government body. Since the UAE lacks a general postal code, it can be a handy way to share a precise location, but it does not replace the street address, P.O. Box or Makani number where those apply.
