Nigeria Postal Codes and Addresses: A Complete Guide
How Nigeria's six-digit postal codes and landmark-based addresses work, the role of NIPOST, and where an exact-location UPCS code fits in.

Nigeria has a national postal code system with six-digit codes, managed by the Nigerian Postal Service, known as NIPOST. The codes exist, but they are used far less in everyday addressing than in countries where the postcode is a routine part of every form. Most Nigerians describe where they live with a house number or plot, a street, an area and a city, often with a nearby landmark, and then give a phone number.
How the national system works
Postal codes in Nigeria are numeric and six digits long. They are organised by region and delivery district, so the leading digits point to a larger area and the later digits to a more local postal area. The structure is explained on the postal code format page. Many deliveries, especially by private couriers and dispatch riders, rely on the written address, the area name and a phone call rather than on the postal code.
How addresses are typically written
A Nigerian address generally contains a house number or plot number, the street name, the area or district, the city, the local government area in some cases, and the state. In the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, addresses often use plot numbers, street names and district names such as Garki or Wuse. In large cities such as Lagos, streets frequently run off main roads and contain many houses with similar numbering, so phrases like "off" or "opposite" followed by a landmark are common. English is the language of addresses. See how to write a Nigerian address.
How UPCS codes work in Nigeria
UPCS generates a short code for an exact location chosen on a map. For Nigeria the prefix is NG, followed by two blocks of letters and digits, for example NG-XXXX-XXXX. Each code corresponds to a 3 m by 3 m grid cell, and the same coordinates always return the same code.
A UPCS code is not an official postal code. It is not issued by NIPOST or any government body, and it does not replace the six-digit postal code or the written address. Think of it as a precise pin that can accompany the normal address: the written address tells people the general area and the code shows the exact doorway, gate or shop front, which is especially useful where landmarks are the main reference.
