Nigerian postal codes are six-digit numbers administered by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST). A code is written after the town or city and state in a full postal address, and it is the value that goes in the postal code field of online checkouts and international shipping forms.
What the six digits are
The code is purely numeric. Its digits follow the postal hierarchy: the first digit or digits correspond to a broad postal region of the country, and the following digits narrow it to a district, a postal area and ultimately to a post office or delivery zone. This means that codes close to each other numerically usually belong to places that are close together in the postal system.
The exact meaning of each position is internal to NIPOST and does not need to be decoded by customers. The reliable approach is to find the correct code through a lookup instead of constructing one; see how to find a Nigeria postal code.
Examples of valid format
These generic values show only the shape:
- 100001
- 900001
- 500001
Any group of six digits has the correct format. Whether the code is assigned to a specific place needs to be checked separately.
Where the code is actually used
Postal codes are required by many international shipping forms, customs declarations and global ecommerce checkouts. Within Nigeria, many private couriers and dispatch riders work chiefly from the written address, the area and the phone number. This means that a missing postal code seldom blocks a local delivery, but a wrong one can still confuse automated systems and shipping calculators.
Common mistakes
- Entering a five-digit or seven-digit value, which does not match the format.
- Putting a space or hyphen inside the number.
- Using the code of a neighbouring area or a different state because the area name is similar.
- Assuming the code identifies a street or a building. It identifies a postal area.
Postal code and exact location
Because a six-digit code covers an area, it does not show where a particular house or shop sits within it. A UPCS code (prefix NG, as in NG-XXXX-XXXX) can be given next to the address to show the exact spot on a map. It is not a postal code and is not issued by NIPOST or the government; it supplements the address, which is described in how to write a Nigerian address. The Nigeria overview brings the pieces together.
Frequently asked questions
How many digits does a Nigerian postal code have?
Six. A Nigerian postal code is made of six digits with no letters, spaces or hyphens.
Do I always need a postal code for a Nigerian address?
Not for every local delivery, as many addresses are written without one. International forms and some online shops require the field, so it is useful to know the correct code.
