How Canada's postal system and six-character postal codes work, how Canadian addresses are written, and how a UPCS exact-location code fits in.

Canada's postal codes are managed by Canada Post and have six characters in a letter-digit-letter, digit-letter-digit pattern, written with a space in the middle. A Canadian address lists the recipient, street line, and then city, province abbreviation and postal code. Canada is officially bilingual, so you will meet addresses in English and French.

    How the national system works

The postal code is made of two halves. The first three characters are the forward sortation area, which groups mail by region before it reaches the local depot. The last three characters narrow it to a smaller delivery unit, which in cities can be one side of a block or a single large building. In rural places a code may cover a wider area.

The first letter relates to a province, territory or part of one, which makes the code useful for routing. Details of the pattern are in Canada postal code format explained.

    How addresses are written

The common order is: name, street line (unit, number and street name), then city, province and postal code. A typical address:

    Jane Doe
    Unit 12, 123 Example Street
    Sampletown ON A1A 1A1
    CANADA

French-language addresses often put the street type before the name, such as rue or avenue, and the number first. Rural addresses may use a route number, a post office box or general delivery. See how to write a Canadian address.

How UPCS codes work in Canada

UPCS (Universal Post Code System) assigns any point on the map a short code. In Canada the code starts with the prefix CA, followed by two blocks of letters and digits, as in CA-XXXX-XXXX (a placeholder, not a real code). Every code represents a 3 m by 3 m cell, and the same coordinates always return the same code.

A UPCS code is not an official postal code and is not issued by Canada Post or any government body. It complements the address by pinpointing a gate, an entrance, a cottage dock or a farm lane that a street address cannot describe well.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a UPCS code the same as a Canadian postal code?

No. A Canadian postal code is an official six-character code managed by Canada Post. A UPCS code is an exact-location code you can add beside the address; it does not replace the postal code.

What prefix do Canadian UPCS codes use?

They start with CA, followed by two blocks of letters and digits, in the pattern CA-XXXX-XXXX.
