The postal code in Saudi Arabia is a five-digit number, but it is only one part of the National Address. A complete reference also includes a four-digit building number, a four-digit additional number and, optionally, a short address of four letters and four digits.
The parts of the National Address
| Part | Format | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Building number | 4 digits | Identifies the individual building |
| Postal code | 5 digits | Identifies the delivery area (district level) |
| Additional number | 4 digits | Narrows the location within the postal code area |
| Short address | 4 letters + 4 digits | A compact reference for the above |
The building number and the additional number are separate from the postal code, so a form that asks only for a five-digit postal code is asking for just one component.
Examples of valid format
These are generic format samples and not real addresses:
- Postal code:
12345 - Building number:
1234 - Additional number:
5678 - Short address:
ABCD1234
A common written layout is building number, street, district, city, postal code, and additional number, for example 1234 Example Street, Example District, Example City 12345 - 5678.
Common mistakes
- Entering the building number in the postal code field, or the reverse. Both are numeric but differ in length: four digits versus five.
- Leaving out the additional number, which weakens delivery accuracy.
- Using letters in the numeric fields or digits in the short address letters.
- Writing the short address with a space or hyphen when the form expects a plain eight-character string.
- Using the postal code of another district because it looks similar.

Where UPCS fits
The National Address is the official reference. A UPCS code, shown as SA-XXXX-XXXX, is separate: it identifies a 3 m by 3 m cell and is not issued by Saudi Post or any authority. Do not enter a UPCS code in a postal code or short address field. It can be added in a note to mark an entrance or gate. The Saudi Arabia overview explains how both are used, and the address format guide shows the written layout.
