A Mexican address usually goes in this order: recipient, street name and number, colonia, postal code and municipality or city, then state. Unlike many English-speaking countries, the street name comes before the number, and the neighbourhood is a required element.

    The line order

    1. Recipient. Person or company name.
    2. Street and number. Street type and name, then the exterior number, and an interior number if needed.
    3. Colonia. Often abbreviated Col.
    4. Postal code, municipality or city. The five-digit código postal, then the place name.
    5. State. Written in full or abbreviated.
    6. Country. Only for international mail.

    Street, number and unit

The street type is usually written before the name: Calle, Avenida (Av.), Boulevard (Blvd.), Calzada, Privada, Cerrada. The number follows the name. Exterior number is abbreviated Núm. Ext. or No. Ext., and the interior (apartment, office or house in a courtyard) is Núm. Int. or just Int. Some addresses add the street intersection, using the phrase entre calle A y calle B, to help the courier.

    Colonia and other names

The colonia identifies the neighbourhood and is a normal piece of the address. Some places also use the words fraccionamiento (a housing development), unidad habitacional or residencial. Write the name as it appears on official documents, since similar names exist in the same city.

    Language

Addresses are in Spanish. Keep accents and the letter ñ where they belong. When an address is part of an international shipment, the country is written on the last line, but the rest stays in Spanish so local carriers can read it.

    Formatted example

    Jane Doe
    Avenida Ejemplo 123, Int. 4
    Col. Ejemplo
    12345 Ciudad Ejemplo, Estado
    MEXICO

The values are placeholders, not a real address.

    Adding an exact location

Where a street has no number or the entrance is not obvious, add a landmark or reference line, and optionally a UPCS code in the form MX-XXXX-XXXX (a placeholder). The code points to a 3 m by 3 m cell and does not replace the postal code or the colonia. For more, see the Mexico overview, the postal code format and delivery challenges.
