How to Find a Postal Code in Mexico
How to find and check a Mexican código postal using the national postal service's directory, the colonia name and existing mail.

To find a Mexican postal code, use the postal code directory published by the national postal service, long known as Servicio Postal Mexicano (Sepomex). The directory is organised around states, municipalities and colonias, which matches how the codes are assigned.
Search by colonia
The most dependable route is by neighbourhood. Choose the state, then the municipality, then the colonia, and the directory returns the código postal for that area. If you only have a street name, first work out the colonia from the address or from a map, since the same street name can run through several neighbourhoods.
You can also search the other way: enter a code and see which colonias and municipality it covers. This is a quick way to check that the code you were given belongs to the place you expect.
Other ways to confirm
- A recent bill, invoice or parcel label. Utility bills, bank letters and parcel labels list the full address including the code.
- The recipient. People normally know their own code.
- Business websites. Companies and institutions often publish the address with the code.
- Map apps. They can display postal codes, but their data can be out of date, so check against the directory if it matters.
Checking a code
Make sure the code has exactly five digits, that it keeps any leading zero, and that the colonia and municipality match the ones in the directory. Many people mistype a digit, so compare the entire address, not just the number. The format guide lists common errors.
If you are unsure
- Prefer the directory result over a guess from a nearby address.
- If a colonia is not found, it may be spelled differently or part of a larger neighbourhood; try a close variant or ask the recipient for a reference.
- If two codes seem possible, check which colonia the building belongs to, not just the street.
- For new developments, the code might be recorded later than the address first appears, so ask the developer or the local post office.
A precise point
A postal code identifies an area, not a doorway. For a hard-to-find house, a private street or a unit inside a large complex, a UPCS code can mark the exact spot, written in the style MX-XXXX-XXXX (placeholder). It complements the código postal and does not replace it. See the Mexico overview and the address format for context.
Frequently asked questions
Can I find a postal code from the colonia name alone?
Usually, yes, together with the municipality and state. Colonia names repeat across the country, so the municipality and state are needed to choose the right one.
Why does a street have more than one postal code?
Because the code belongs to an area such as a colonia, a long street that crosses several colonias can carry several codes.
