Location Codes for Parcel Lockers and Delivery Points
How locker networks and pick-up point operators can give each unit an exact, shareable code so recipients and couriers find it.
Updated 14 October 2026 · 2 min read
A parcel locker works only when people can find it. They are installed in supermarkets, stations, petrol forecourts and apartment lobbies, in spots that suit the operator's footfall but are not necessarily easy to describe. The address of the host site may be a shopping centre with six entrances, with the locker in a corridor between two of them.
Two audiences, one point
The locker has two sets of visitors. Couriers load it, and need the exact position inside or beside the host site. Recipients collect from it, and need to know where to walk or drive. A code assigned to the locker bank lets both refer to the same cell.
What operators can do
- Publish a code per site on the locker's web page and in the "ready to collect" message.
- Distinguish entrances. For a mall or station, use the code for the nearest entrance and add a written hint such as "next to the pharmacy".
- Add codes to installation records, so technicians who service units find them.
- Offer the locker as a delivery option at checkout, with its code shown on the order.
Handling delivery points more broadly
The same approach fits shop-based pick-up points, kiosks and parcel shops. Each is a fixed place that many people need to find. The operator generates a code once, stores it, and reuses it on every message about that site.
Considerations
A code does not show whether the locker is full, working or open at night. Keep that status in your own app. Indoor placement also limits what a map pin can say: a pin on the cell inside a building places the locker correctly, but the visitor still needs to know which floor. Include floor and landmark text.
If lockers are moved, create a new code for the new place and retire the old one in your records, since the old cell will still resolve to the former position.
Operators of locker networks can read the documentation to see how codes can be generated and looked up with an API key on the server. See also retail store pick-up and courier and parcel companies.
Frequently asked questions
Does the code open or identify a particular locker compartment?
No. It names the place where the locker bank stands. Compartment numbers and access codes belong to the locker system.
