    Location Codes and Emergency Response

UPCS is not an emergency service. This page explains how an exact-location code can complement, but never replace, official dispatch systems.

UPCS is not an emergency service. It does not receive calls, does not dispatch ambulances, fire crews or police, and has no arrangement with emergency organisations. In an emergency, always contact the official emergency number for your country. This page describes only how an exact location code can sit beside an address as extra information.

The role a code can play

Emergency call-takers must establish where help is needed, and that is not always simple. Callers may be stressed, in an unfamiliar area, or at a place without a clear street address, such as a park, a rural track or a new building. Official dispatch systems have their own methods for working out location, and those methods come first.

A UPCS code is a short reference to a 3 m by 3 m cell. If a caller already knows a code for the place, for example a family home they saved earlier, they can read it out as extra detail. Whether a dispatcher can use it depends entirely on that service's own systems and procedures.

    Preparing in advance

People can do some low-effort preparation that helps in any situation:

    • Generate and save the code for your home, your workplace and a place you visit often.
    • Share the code with family so that anyone can describe where you are.
    • Write down your full normal address and the nearest main road as the primary information.
    • For rural properties, note which gate or track is the access point, and describe it clearly.

Organisations that run their own response

Private security firms, event medical teams and site safety officers sometimes run their own dispatch. They can record a code for each gate or first-aid post, so that a message such as "incident near code ..." points to a precise spot. This is an internal procedure of that organisation, not something UPCS provides.

    What not to rely on

A code cannot tell anyone that something is wrong, and it does not work offline. Never delay calling the official number to look up or generate a code. The page on ambulance and home healthcare looks at planned visits, and the government and public services page covers non-emergency public work. Frequently asked questions

Can I call UPCS in an emergency?

No. UPCS is not an emergency service and cannot dispatch help. Always contact your local official emergency number.

Do emergency services use UPCS codes?

UPCS does not have any arrangement with emergency services. A code is simply information a caller may choose to read out alongside their normal address.
