Digital addresses
Digital Address vs Physical Address
A physical address describes a place in words; a digital address points to it with a code or coordinates. Compare how each works and when to use which.

A physical address describes where a place is using human-readable parts such as a building number, a street, a district and a city. A digital address points to the same place with a code or coordinates that software can read. They answer the same question in different ways.
How each one identifies a place
A physical address works by hierarchy. You narrow down from a country to a city, a street and a building. It relies on names and numbers that people have agreed upon and that appear on signs, maps and records.
A digital address works by position. It picks one point or cell on the map and gives it a reference. There is no hierarchy to follow, and no sign is needed.
Where each is strong
| Physical address | Digital address | |
|---|---|---|
| Readable by people | Yes, immediately | Only after a lookup |
| Needs street names and numbers | Yes | No |
| Precise to a doorway | Not always | Often |
| Legally recognised | Usually | Usually not |
| Works across languages | Depends on script | Yes |
Where each is weak
Physical addresses fail where streets are unnamed, numbers are skipped or buildings are added faster than records. They are also ambiguous when several places share a name. Digital addresses fail when the receiver has no map tool, or when the code is not recognised by the organisation you are dealing with. See limitations of digital addresses.
Using them together
The most dependable approach is to give both. A physical address provides context that people understand, and the digital address removes the guesswork about where exactly to go. Many delivery problems vanish when a driver has the written address and a pin to open in a map.
For example, you could write your street address in the normal fields of a form, and add a code in a notes field. How to write a digital address in forms shows how.
A third category
Postal addresses are a special kind of physical address, used by mail services and tied to postal codes. They are covered separately in digital address vs postal address.
Summary
Physical addresses describe, digital addresses point. Neither is better in all situations. Use the physical address for recognition and the digital address for precision.
