    Designing Address Forms with a Location Field

    Practical address form design for international users, adding an optional map or UPCS code field without breaking existing address entry.

    An address form has one job: collect enough information for a parcel or technician to arrive. Adding a location picker can help, but the basics matter more. These guidelines apply whether or not you use UPCS.

    Start with the fields

    • Use a single "name" field rather than forcing first and last name.
    • Offer two or three free-text address lines instead of splitting into house number and street, since formats differ widely.
    • Make city, region and postcode flexible per country. Required-ness and labels vary: "state", "county", "prefecture", "province".
    • Put the country selector first so the rest of the form can adapt.
    • Keep a phone number field; couriers use it.

    Add location as an optional layer

    Add a clearly optional section: "Pin the exact delivery spot". It can be an embedded map (embed the UPCS map) or a plain text field that accepts a UPCS code, checked server-side with a lookup. Explain why: "This helps the driver find your door."

    Validation that helps

    // Loose, friendly validation for a typed code
    const re = /^[A-Za-z]{2}-[A-Za-z0-9]{4}-[A-Za-z0-9]{4}$/;
    function hint(value) {
      return re.test(value.trim()) ? '' : 'Codes look like PK-1A2B-3C4D';
    }

    Show a hint, not a hard block, and let a lookup have the final say; see storing a UPCS code in your database.

    Accessibility and mobile

    • Every input has a visible label and an autocomplete attribute where relevant.
    • Error messages say what to fix, in text next to the field.
    • Give the map a keyboard-friendly alternative: typing the address or code.
    • Use appropriate input types and avoid forcing numeric keyboards on fields that may contain letters.

    Failure modes

    If the map cannot load, the form still works. See handle onError and session_expired. For privacy aspects of collecting a precise point, read location data and GDPR concepts.

    A UPCS code complements the postal address; it is not an official postcode and should never be the only thing you collect.

    Frequently asked questions

    Should I replace the address with a map?

    No. Keep normal address fields. A map or UPCS code is an optional extra that makes the exact point clearer.

    Should the postcode field be required?

    Only where the country uses postcodes. Some countries have no nationwide system, so mark it required per country, not globally.
