State, Province and Region in Addresses
Some addresses need a state or province, others do not. Learn what the region field is for, when to include it and how abbreviations work.

The region field holds the top-level administrative area inside a country: a state, province, county, prefecture, department or similar unit. Its role depends on how the country organises its postal system.
What the region does
The region narrows the search before the city is considered. In countries where several towns share a name, the region tells which one is meant. In countries with few duplicates or with a strong postal code system, it may be redundant.
Where it is expected
Some countries expect a region on nearly every address, often as a short abbreviation placed next to the postal code. Others treat the region as optional, and some leave it out entirely because the postal code and city are enough. The destination's convention should always win.
Abbreviations
Where abbreviations are standard, they are short and well known to local staff. Outside that context, they can be unclear because two regions may share the same initials in different countries. When writing from abroad, spelling out the name is safer unless you know the official abbreviation.
Form design implications
A form that makes region mandatory for every country will frustrate users in places where no such concept exists. A good form shows the field only where relevant, and adjusts its label (state, province, county) to the country. See good address form design.
Region and postal code
The region and postal code should be consistent. Many postal code systems are tied to a region, and a mismatch usually indicates a typo. This relationship is part of why address validation is hard.
Summary
The region is an optional or required disambiguator, depending on the country. Write it in the form the destination uses, spell it out when unsure, and let your forms adapt to the country rather than forcing one structure.
Frequently asked questions
Do I always need to write a state or province?
No. Some countries expect it, others treat it as optional or do not use one at all. Follow the destination's convention.
Should I abbreviate the region name?
Only if the destination uses standard abbreviations and you know them. Otherwise write the full name to avoid ambiguity.
