Delivery and Addressing Challenges in Turkey

Why Turkish deliveries go astray: complexes with many blocks, similar street names, renamed streets and missing notes, and how exact codes help.

Turkey has a strong courier and e-commerce sector and a structured address model, yet delivery problems still occur at the last step: finding the right building, block or entrance. Understanding the typical pitfalls helps both couriers and shops reduce failed attempts.

    Repeated and similar names

Street and neighbourhood names are often reused across a district or across provinces. A sokak called by a common name may exist in several neighbourhoods of the same city. Without the mahalle and district, a courier cannot tell them apart, so a checkout should require the neighbourhood, not only the street.

    Housing complexes and blocks

Large residential complexes (site) with multiple blocks, gates and security desks are common. A building number such as No: 12 may belong to the whole complex while the real destination is Block B, entrance 2, flat 5. Failing to record the block and complex name is a frequent cause of re-delivery. Add fields for complex name, block, floor and apartment in your forms.

    Street changes and growth

Rapidly growing cities add neighbourhoods and streets, and names and numbering can be updated over time. Older map data or saved customer addresses may no longer match the official record. Encouraging customers to update their saved address, and to double check the building number, helps.

    Rural and village addresses

In villages (köy), addresses rely on the village name, sometimes a house or plot number, and a district. Couriers frequently use phone calls to find the exact house. A phone number is therefore as important as the written address.

    Phone numbers and notes

Turkish couriers commonly call the recipient on arrival. Collect a mobile number and a short note (for example, the door colour or a nearby shop). Keep the note free of unnecessary personal data.

    Using an exact-location code

A UPCS code such as TR-XXXX-XXXX points to a 3 m by 3 m cell, so a customer can mark the gate or entrance of a complex on the map and attach the code to the order. This does not replace the neighbourhood, street, number or posta kodu; see the address format guide and the postal code format. Shops that want to add a map at checkout can look at the available plugins.

    Frequently asked questions

What most often causes failed deliveries in Turkey?

Incomplete building or apartment details, housing complexes with several blocks and gates, and street names that repeat across neighbourhoods are common causes.

Should a shop ask for both the postal code and a map location?

Yes, where practical. The postal code supports routing, and a map pin or UPCS code shows the exact entrance.
