How to Find a Spanish Postal Code

Find the right Spanish codigo postal using the Correos directory, check the province prefix, and handle large cities with many codes.

The most reliable source for a Spanish codigo postal is the lookup published by the national postal operator, Correos. It lets you search by province, town and street, and it returns the code used by the delivery network.

Choose the province first, then the town, then the street and, if asked, the number. Starting from the province avoids confusion with towns that share a name in different parts of Spain. For a small town with one code, the town search alone is enough. In a city, the street and number decide which of several codes applies, because a long avenue may run through several postal zones.

Use the province as a check

The first two digits of the code correspond to the province, as explained in Spain postal code format explained. If an address says Valencia but the code begins with 28, one of them is wrong. This is a quick way to catch typing errors before sending a parcel.

    Other sources

    • Previous letters, invoices and contracts for the property.
    • A delivery address already accepted by a trusted retailer.
    • The town hall (ayuntamiento), which keeps street records.
    • The building administrator or a neighbour for shared blocks.

    If you are unsure

    • Do not guess. A wrong code may delay a parcel and send it to the wrong delivery office.
    • Ask the recipient to copy the code from a recent letter.
    • For new urbanisations, check with the town hall, since streets can take time to appear in directories.
    • For addresses with s/n, add the property name or road kilometre as a note.

    Language of street names

Where a street has names in more than one language, search with the form on the street sign, and try the other form if there is no match. The postal code itself is the same.

    Adding an exact point

When a property is hard to find, such as a house in an urbanisation or a rural building without a number, a UPCS code can accompany the codigo postal. Mark the entrance on the UPCS map and keep the ES code (placeholder: ES-XXXX-XXXX) with the address. It is not issued by Correos and does not change the postal code. Frequently asked questions

Do I need the street to find a Spanish postal code?

For a small town, the town name is often enough. For a city with many codes you need the street and number.

How can I quickly tell whether a code matches the province?

Check that its first two digits match the province number. For example, Madrid addresses begin with 28.
