A step-by-step guide to the Russian address format: component order, Cyrillic or Latin script, building and flat numbers, with a sample address.

A Russian address is built from region down to apartment, and most components carry a short label such as ул. for street or д. for house. Writing it in the standard order and the local script gives the best chance of fast, correct delivery.

    Component order

For domestic mail the usual order, from general to specific, is:

    1. Postal index (six digits)
    2. Country (often omitted on domestic mail)
    3. Region: oblast, krai, republic or federal city
    4. District (raion), where applicable
    5. City, town or village
    6. Street (улица, проспект, переулок)
    7. House number (д.)
    8. Building or block (корп.) and structure (стр.), if any
    9. Apartment (кв.) or office
    10. Recipient name

Some forms and parcel labels reverse this, placing the recipient first and the index last. Either way, keep each component on a clear line or separated by commas.

    Common abbreviations

    • ул. — street (улица)
    • пр-т — avenue (проспект)
    • пер. — lane (переулок)
    • д. — house (дом)
    • корп. — building or block (корпус)
    • стр. — structure (строение)
    • кв. — apartment (квартира)
    • оф. — office

    Script considerations

Domestic couriers and Russian Post expect Cyrillic. When shipping from abroad, a transliterated address is common and workable, but transliteration is not always unique: the same name can be spelled several ways in Latin letters. Keep one spelling throughout, write the country name clearly, and avoid splitting a single name across Cyrillic and Latin characters.

    Buildings, areas and landmarks

In cities, large residential blocks often have a house number with a building number, and several entrances (подъезд) and floors per building. Courier instructions such as the entrance, floor and intercom code are frequently added at the end because they decide whether delivery succeeds. In villages, the address may be just the village name and a house number, so a nearby landmark or the district name helps.

    Example with placeholder values

    123456, Russia
    Example Oblast, Example District
    г. Exampleville, ул. Sample, д. 10, корп. 2, кв. 45
    Recipient: Ivan Example

    Latin version for international mail:

    Ivan Example
    Sample St., 10, bldg 2, apt 45
    Exampleville, Example Oblast
    123456 Russia

    Adding an exact location

Even a perfect address cannot always show which gate or entrance to use. You can add a UPCS code such as RU-XXXX-XXXX in a comment field to mark that spot. It does not replace the index; see Russia postal code format for the official part, or the delivery page for practical courier tips.

    Frequently asked questions

Should a Russian address be written in Cyrillic or Latin letters?

Cyrillic is best for domestic delivery. Latin transliteration is common on international mail, but it should be consistent and not mixed with Cyrillic within one line.

What does kv. mean in a Russian address?

It is the abbreviation for kvartira, meaning apartment or flat. House is d. (dom) and building or block is korp. (korpus).
