Troubleshooting
UPCS Code Points to the Wrong Place
When a UPCS code or map shows a different place than you expected, check for typos, swapped coordinates and the size of the 3 m grid cell.
Updated 14 October 2026 · 2 min read
A UPCS code points to one 3 m by 3 m grid cell. If the map shows a different place than you expected, the code was probably mistyped, the coordinates behind it were wrong, or the point you chose was a few metres off.
Symptom
You look up a code and the pin is in another street, another city or another country, or it is close but not on the door you meant.
Likely causes
- One character in the code is wrong. Another valid code then points to a different cell.
- The country prefix is wrong.
- Latitude and longitude were swapped, or the wrong decimal was copied when the code was generated.
- The point selected on the map was on the wrong side of a building or road.
- The code was generated from a rough address rather than an exact point.
Fix it step by step
- Check the code character by character against its source, including the two-letter country prefix.
- Open it at
upcs.io/followed by the code, and compare the coordinates and country with where you expect to be. - Zoom in on the map. The grid appears from zoom 18, so you can see exactly which cell the code covers.
- If you generated it from coordinates, make sure latitude comes first and longitude second, and that signs (minus for south or west) are correct.
- If the cell is next to the right place, choose the right point on the map and generate a new code. The same point always gives the same code.
- Share the new code and replace the old one wherever it was saved.
Confirm it is fixed
Looking up the new code shows the correct place, coordinates and country. See lookup returns 404 if the code is not found at all.
When to contact support
If a code that you generated yourself repeatedly shows the wrong place, contact support with the code and the coordinates you expected.
Frequently asked questions
How precise is a UPCS code?
Each code corresponds to a 3 m by 3 m grid cell. The same coordinates always give the same code.
