    Postcode vs PIN Code Explained

A PIN code is the name used in India for its postal code, short for Postal Index Number. It is not the same as a bank or card PIN.

In India, the postal code is called a PIN code, short for Postal Index Number. It does the same job as a postcode elsewhere: it identifies a delivery area so mail can be routed correctly. The name is local, but the concept is the same.

    Two very different "PINs"

The word PIN causes confusion because it is used in two unrelated ways:

    • a postal PIN code is a public number, printed on addresses, used to route mail
    • a bank or card PIN is a private number that you keep secret to authorise payments

They have nothing to do with each other. You can share your postal PIN code freely when giving an address, but you should never share a card PIN.

How a postal PIN code works

A PIN code uses a fixed number of digits, and the digits narrow from a broad region down to a specific delivery area. This is the same hierarchical idea described in postcode structure explained. A single PIN code can cover many streets or even several villages, so it is an area label, not a precise location.

    Postcode, ZIP code, PIN code

All are national names for an address code:

    • postcode and postal code are general terms
    • ZIP code is the American term; see postcode vs ZIP code
    • PIN code is the Indian term

The format and rules are set by each country, not by an international body.

Why a code alone may not be enough

Because a PIN code covers a wide area, delivery still relies on house number, street and landmark information. In places where addresses are informal, a driver may need extra help. That limitation is shared with all area codes; read why postcodes cannot pinpoint exact locations.

    Forms and entry

When asking for a PIN code in a form, accept digits only and avoid stripping leading zeros if a country uses them; see leading zeros in postcodes.

UPCS is a separate, optional system that gives an exact-location code to a map cell. It is not a PIN code and does not replace the official postal code.
