Location Codes for Agriculture and Farm Plots
How farms, co-operatives and buyers can mark farm gates, collection points and field entrances with exact location codes.

Farms have names in the local community but rarely on a map. The address might be the nearest village, and a delivery driver is expected to "ask at the shop". That works until the driver is a stranger, the seasonal worker is new, or a buyer's truck arrives at harvest time with perishable goods and no one to guide it.
What needs a precise point
On a farm, the useful location is a specific entrance, not the property:
- The farm gate where trucks turn off the public road.
- Collection points where produce is weighed or loaded.
- Cold store or packing shed.
- Field entrances for contractors with spraying or harvesting machinery.
- Water points and pumps for maintenance teams.
Placing a pin on each and labelling it gives workers, buyers and suppliers a common list.
Supply chain uses
Buyers and aggregators collect produce from many small farms. A route planner works with coordinates, but farmers cannot be expected to provide them. A short code is easier to speak, write on a delivery note or send in a message. The buyer's system can then resolve codes to coordinates through the API when it plans the collection round.
Seasonal and practical points
- Seasonal access. A track may be passable only in the dry season. Keep an alternative code for the wet-season gate.
- Contract labour. New workers can be told "meet at this code" instead of a hand-drawn map.
- Input deliveries. Fertiliser and seed suppliers deliver to the field-side store, not the farmhouse.
- Co-operatives. A member list with a code per farm makes collection scheduling cleaner.
Limits
A pin is not a land title and it is not a field boundary. For precision agriculture or area measurement, farmers need survey data or specialist tools, which UPCS does not offer. Connectivity in rural areas can also be poor, so write the code and coordinates on paper or in a text message beforehand.
Teams with a developer can generate and resolve codes through the documentation endpoints. Related reading: real estate and property listings and freight and trucking.
Piloting it on one harvest round
Start small: record the gate and the main collection point for a handful of farms, test the codes during one harvest round, and ask drivers whether they saved time. Expand to field entrances and storage only once the first list proves useful.
Frequently asked questions
Can a code describe the boundary of a field?
No. A code marks one 3 m by 3 m cell. It can name a gate or a corner but not the whole field outline.
