South African addresses are written in English in nearly all postal and commercial use, even though the country has eleven official languages. The order goes from the specific to the general, and the postal code closes the address.
The standard order
- Recipient name
- Unit number and building, complex or estate name, if applicable
- Street number and street name
- Suburb
- City or town
- Postal code (four digits)
On the last line, many people put the city and code together, with the suburb on the line above. Province is sometimes added after the city, particularly on forms for international delivery. The country name, South Africa, is the last line for mail sent from abroad.
Complexes, estates and units
A large share of South African homes are in security complexes, townhouse developments, estates and sectional-title blocks. For these, the unit number and the name of the complex are more useful to a courier than the street number alone, and they should not be left out. A typical pattern is "Unit 12, Example Gardens" on one line, then the street address of the complex. Business parks work the same way: include the park name, building and suite.
Street addresses versus PO Boxes
A street address gives a physical place where a courier can deliver. A PO Box address contains the box number, the post office name and the box code. These are not interchangeable: a courier cannot deliver to a PO Box, and the street code is different from the box code in the same town. If an online shop collects both, it should clearly label the fields. See South Africa postal code format explained.
Rural and informal areas
On farms and in remote areas, the address may use a farm name, a road name or a route description. In informal settlements and some townships, official street numbers may be missing, and residents describe the location through section names, stand numbers or landmarks. For deliveries to such places, it helps to add a contact phone number and a precise map location.

A UPCS code (prefix ZA, as in ZA-XXXX-XXXX) can be added in a notes field or on a separate line to show the exact gate or entrance. It is not part of the official address and does not replace the postal code, but it gives the courier a map point. If you only know the suburb, see how to find the postal code, or return to the South Africa overview.
Frequently asked questions
Do I include the province in a South African address?
It is optional on domestic mail, because the suburb, city and postal code identify the place. Some forms and international shipments ask for it, and it is helpful for common place names.
How do I write an address in a complex or estate?
Put the unit or house number and the complex or estate name on the line above the street address, then the street, suburb, city and postal code.
