    Japan Delivery and Addressing Challenges

Block-based numbering, long building names and multilingual forms create delivery problems in Japan. See how an exact-location code can help.

Japan has an efficient delivery sector, yet its addressing system is unlike most others, and that creates predictable difficulties, especially for new arrivals, foreign shops and drivers who do not know a district.

    Common challenges

Block-based numbering. Addresses identify districts, blocks and plots, not streets. Because the numbers relate to blocks and plots rather than to a road, neighbouring numbers are not necessarily adjacent on the ground. A driver cannot simply follow a road and watch numbers increase.

Missing street names. Many roads have no name used in addresses, so people give directions by building, junction or landmark.

Building names and room numbers. In apartments, the building name and room number identify the delivery point. When an online form drops the building name or truncates it, the parcel may be returned.

Script and keyboard issues. Japanese address forms mix kanji, kana and numbers, and full-width characters. A shop built for Latin addresses can split or reject these inputs. Romanised and Japanese versions of one address may not match.

Reversed order. Forms that assume a European order, street first, often scramble Japanese addresses.

Multiple entrances and large buildings. Complexes, station buildings and campuses can have many gates, and the postal address often points only to the lot.

    Practical steps

    Where an exact-location code fits

A UPCS code like JP-XXXX-XXXX represents a 3 m x 3 m cell. At checkout, a customer marks the entrance, and the shop stores the code with the order. A driver can open the point in a map and be taken to it, which supports cases where the block number does not show where the door is.

The code is a complement. UPCS is not a postal code, is not issued by Japan Post and is not linked to any carrier. Merchants using WooCommerce, PrestaShop or OpenCart can use the UPCS plugins, and developers can read the API documentation.

    Frequently asked questions

Why is it hard to find a house by number in Japan?

Numbers refer to blocks and plots rather than positions along a street, so consecutive numbers are not always next to each other.

Do UPCS codes work in Japan?

Yes, Japan is among the supported countries, with codes starting JP. A code is an optional extra for an exact location and does not replace the official address.
